A Day Playing with Glass Stringers

Or how I learnt to be patient!

Today has been all about stringers! Stringers are long thin pieces of glass, they come in different thicknesses and can be both transparent and opaque. They can be easily snapped so are great to work with.

I have had the idea for this project for a week or so and today was the first stage. I ordered some stringers in shades of blue and green, I wanted to use colours that were close on the colour wheel so my piece would be harmonious. I was very excited when they arrived, along with some other goodies. As ever, my husband said what the heck have you been buying now!! I like to remind him of all the tools he has had delivered to the house!

I first cut a base of clear glass about 17 cm square. I then arranged the stringers in a diagonal pattern across the glass, this was painstakingly delicate work, measuring each one to fit. Now they don't fit perfectly but this won't matter.. It may actually add to the design I have in mind.

I added a few drops of glass fusing glue and let it dry ( I multitasked and got some washing hung up on the rack while it dried, when will the sun appear?)

Once dry, I held my breath ( not easy when you have lung problems!) and put it carefully into the kiln. It is now on for a very light tack fuse.

And once it’s done? Well, you will have to find out with my next blog post!
